Overview General Dynamics Electric Boat provides an unparalleled learning experience for college students, offering practical exposure in the defense industry alongside expert engineers, shaping the future of submarine innovation. Engineers at Electric Boat work collaboratively across departments and with our customer to develop innovative solutions for the United States Navy’s nuclear submarines. As an intern, you'll be exposed to various engineering activities with the support of our senior staff. This program grants our trainees the opportunity to develop valuable skills and dive into cutting-edge projects such as leading the Columbia Class design and enhancing Virginia Class submarines. Every trainee will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge in order to excel in the engineering domain. This program requires an 8 to 12 week commitment during the Summer 2027 Season . Participation in this program requires medical screening, passing a drug test, and potential DOD Investigation This is not a remote opportunity. All applicants have the potential to be Placed at any of the following locations: Groton CT, New London CT, North Kingstown RI, Newport RI, North Stonington CT. The Concept Formulation (CONFORM) team leads EB’s concept development work, including research and development (R&D) efforts, payload integration, capability insertion studies, warfare analysis, and the SSN(X) program. We are seeking a technically strong, analytically driven engineer who wants to join our R&D team next summer. This internship blends engineering understanding with program coordination, budget management, and long-term strategic thinking. Groups within CONFORM, relative to this internship, include: The Research and Development (R&D) group includes internally funded independent research and development (IR&D), shipyard technology R&D (SY4.0), and capability and technology team (CATT) studies; externally funded contract research and development (CR&D) with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Navy Undersea Technology Office (NAVSEA073); and university and small business outreach including collaboration with the National Institute of Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT), other university research opportunities such as senior design Capstone projects, and small business collaboration to identify and develop new technologies that are consumable by the submarine fleet. The Capability Insertions group assists keeping EB as the premier integrator of weapons, unmanned systems, and manned submersibles aboard U.S. nuclear submarines. Also, responsible for surveying emerging technologies areas to identify potential opportunities for current and future submarines.
