The AVP, Tax serves as the primary tax executive for the organization, directing the tax strategy,
compliance framework, and financial reporting for the organization. This role is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the tax provision under both GAAP (ASC 740) and Statutory (SSAP 101) standards, while proactively identifying opportunities to optimize the company’s tax position. As a key leader in the
finance organization, the AVP will advise senior leadership on the tax implications of business strategies, including M&A, capital management, and regulatory changes.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership: Direct the tax function, aligning tax strategies with corporate business objectives. Provide expert counsel to the CFO and CAO on the tax impact of investments, reinsurance transactions, and corporate structuring.
Provision & Reporting: Lead the end-to-end GAAP and Statutory tax accounting process. Ensure the accuracy of quarterly and annual tax provisions, including the complex Admitted Asset calculations under SSAP 101 for the P&C entities.
Consolidated Compliance: Oversee the U.S. consolidated Form 1120.
Premium Tax Strategy: Provide executive oversight of premium and surplus lines tax filings across multiple jurisdictions, ensuring optimization of retaliatory tax positions and credits.
Tax Controversy & Audit Defense: Act as the primary liaison for Federal and State taxing authorities. Lead the defense strategy for all tax audits and proactively manage the company’s tax risk profile.
Regulatory & Legislative Monitoring: Evaluate and communicate the impact of emerging tax legislation on the company’s effective tax rate (ETR) and capital position.
Internal Controls & Governance: Maintain a robust control environment over tax reporting (SOX/MAR). Design and implement tax policies that mitigate operational risk and ensure global consistency.
Stakeholder Management: Manage relationships with external auditors, tax consultants, and regulatory bodies
Team Development: Lead and mentor a high-performing tax team. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging technology to drive automation and efficiency.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA and/or Master’s in Taxation (MST) required.
Experience: Minimum of 12–15 years of progressive tax experience, with a significant focus on the Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance industry.
Technical Expertise: * Mastery of ASC 740 (GAAP) and SSAP 101 (Statutory) is essential.
Deep understanding of the P&C Yellow Book and the nuances of insurance-specific tax law (e.g., discounting of unpaid losses, PRTF).
