Their commitment, collective expertise, and unique capabilities are the engine room behind SBM Offshore’s True. Blue. Transition. - shaping the future of energy, and beyond. About Us: SBM Offshore is a global leader in deepwater ocean infrastructure, delivering floating production solutions across the full asset lifecycle—from design and construction to installation and operation. Supported by a global team of more than 8,000 professionals, the Company operates a long-term, asset-backed business model that delivers high-availability assets and predictable cash flows. SBM Offshore combines engineering expertise, operational reliability, and selective innovation to support safe, efficient, and lower-carbon energy production, while extending its capabilities into new opportunities across the blue economy.
Purpose
The MPF hull is characterized by a long roll natural period, above 20 s. Consequently, second-order wave excitation may significantly contribute to its roll response and must be properly evaluated when determining design motions and accelerations and when performing mooring analyses.
Hydrodynamic databases derived using potential-flow software such as Hydrostar are a prerequisite for these analyses. However, potential-flow theory does not directly account for viscous roll damping. This contribution is therefore generally represented by additional linear or quadratic damping terms.
The focus of the internship will be on implementing quadratic roll damping in second-order motion calculations. Its influence on first-order motions and loads, as well as on second-order motions and loads in the other degrees of freedom, will also be investigated where relevant.
The purpose of the internship is to define and implement the most appropriate methodology, taking into consideration:
The current state of the art
Existing formulations and linearization methods
Model test findings and available reference data
Practicality to deploy method on projects and impact on design values.
Responsibilities
The internship will cover three main steps:
Understand the scope and prepare a literature review
SBM engineering practices
Literature on the topic.
Become familiar with Hydrostar and the relevant motion-analysis tools
The objective will be to define and implement a methodology ensuring:
Appropriate and consistent modelling of quadratic roll damping in first- and second-order motion calculations.
Numerically stable and converged second-order roll-response calculations.
Good agreement between numerical predictions and available basin-test results
A robust and practical methodology for project
Apply the method on a past project to assess impact overall
On motion calibration / analyses (design accelerations)
Mooring analyses (as appropriate)
