The Director of Mechanical Engineering in Advanced Surgical’s R&D department will lead all elements of R&D for the Mechanical Engineering team. This role oversees the entire product lifecycle – from early-stage product development through sustaining on-market products – across the entire product portfolio. In addition to the product-centric responsibilities, the Director will foster a culture of excellence and accountability in alignment with ConMed’s 5 pillars, support team member career development aspirations, and focus on continuous improvement of development methodology and core capabilities. The Director will operate in alignment with ConMed’s Leadership Expectations and will lead a team Engineering Managers.
This is an onsite role based in Denver, Colorado.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Leadership:
Define and deliver Mechanical Engineering team vision aligned with business objectives and overall Advanced Surgical R&D vision.
Partner with R&D counterparts, Marketing, and other critical functions to develop portfolio strategy and technology roadmaps.
Identify emerging technologies and integrate them into product roadmaps.
Foster a culture of innovation and accountability
Actively support the career development of managers and engineers
Create a vision that inspires the team to push the boundaries and raise the standard of excellence
Management/Communication:
Contributes to R&D leadership meetings and updates
Facilitates team and business meetings effectively
Effectively communicates opportunities, risks, trade-offs, and recommendations to superiors
Delivers engaging, informative, well-organized presentations.
Resolves and/or escalates issues as appropriate.
Understands how to facilitate communicate difficult/sensitive information.
Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities.
Develops team and organizational talent and development plans
Develops and executes annual budget and resource management
Product Development Execution
Oversees the entire product lifecycle – from early-stage product development through sustaining on-market products – across the entire product portfolio, ensuring compliance to applicable requirements and standards.
Champion best innovation practices, implement robust development processes, and drive continuous improvement in technology and product performance.
Ensure projects are properly resourced with the right level of skillsets and experience
Minimum Requirements:
Four (4) year degree minimum in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent.
10+ years in medical device R&D or similar, with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
20% Travel
Preferred Requirements:
Master’s degree is highly desirable
Proven track record in product development under FDA and ISO 13485 compliance.
