Position summary: Conducts research and development activities for The M. K. Morse Company. Applies theories, principles, and models when conducting experiments and research activities. Summarizes the results and communicates findings to other departments. Assesses the scope of projects and ensures projects are on time and within budget. Develops technical documentation for all projects. Work is generally both independent and collaborative in nature.
Essential functions - These include, but are not limited to the following:
• Participate in all aspects of projects, from initial investigation and concept development through to delivering a cost-effective useable solution.
• Carry out research into new and existing processes, devices, technologies, materials and techniques, thereby develop ideas for further investigation.
• Creating designs for instruments or devices based on innovative concepts so that they are functional
• Develop and test methods of alternate designs and processing methods to assess feasibility, operating condition effects, possible new applications and necessity of modifications to current and existing products
• Analyze data provided from tests and experiments and progress learning to gather knowledge and understanding of the subject of research.
• Develop research solutions ready to convert into product development projects.
• Compare and contrast different approaches, methodologies, materials to develop the best outcome.
• Work with other team members and the wider engineering community to develop and maintain good relationships with internal and external contacts at all levels including other companies, universities and research institutes.
• Review of patents and create patent portfolio for IP generation.
• Represent the M. K. Morse Company at the Technical Committees and Conferences
• Represent the M. K. Morse Company in a professional manner.
• Understand and follow company procedures to be able to work within the system and effect change.
• Willing travel. Approximately 10% of travel.
Skills and experience:
• 2-5 years of experience in manufacturing, product development, or research is preferred, cutting tool experience preferred; ideally in cutting tool development, design, or application.
• Strong project management and team leadership skills to lead engineers, technicians and operators.
• Effective oral and written communications skills.
• Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment and with internal and customers & suppliers.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a timely manner.
• Self-motivated, assertive and able to work with minimal supervision and initiate and drive projects to complete successfully in a timely manner.
• Ability to comprehend and write research publications.
