TARGET CLOSE DATE: 11/20/2026 PAY GRADE: Grade 26 TYPE: Full time JOB SUMMARY: The City of Birmingham is seeking a qualified Traffic Systems Engineer responsible for coordinating and overseeing traffic studies, road construction reviews, and accident analyses to promote public safety and compliance with federal and local standards. Work includes developing plans and systems to improve traffic flow and control, enhance pedestrian and roadway safety, and ensure adequate street lighting. The position oversees the design of traffic control systems using accepted civil engineering practices, applicable standards and specifications, and nationally recognized engineering codes and regulations. The Traffic Systems Engineer also reviews traffic data and recommendations from subordinate staff to determine appropriate measures for improving traffic operations. The pay range for this job is presented below: $60,486 - $93,828 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position: Option A: Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree. Driver's license. Option B: Be currently enrolled and actively working toward graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or another closely related degree, within 6 months of the opening date of this job announcement. TYPICAL JOB DUTIES: Reviews and analyzes data from traffic studies using a variety of computer software in order to evaluate and interpret the results of the study and to make determinations for potential interventions to traffic and roadway safety issues. Prepares, monitors, and administers departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits. Communicates with coworkers, supervisors, governmental agencies or departments, private contractors, and members of the public using verbal, written, and electronic communication in order to identify and solve problems related to the flow of traffic. Operates and maintains the central traffic computer operations and other signal systems in order to ensure that traffic flows safely and efficiently. Oversees the design of traffic control systems using accepted civil engineering practices, jurisdiction-specific standards and specifications, and nationally recognized engineering codes, standards, or regulations.
